Tired of sleeping with a watch? Garmin breaks the rules of connected sleep with a simple armband

For millions of users, sleep tracking has become a ritual. But a ritual that comes with its share of constraints, the main one being having to wear a watch on your wrist all night. Garmin, a key player in connected well-being, seems to have heard this complaint and is responding today by launching an armband.

The Index Sleep Monitor, available today, is a simple and lightweight armband to be worn on the upper arm. The idea is to free up the wrist to provide optimal comfort, without sacrificing the richness of the data. And on this point, the promise is ambitious.

Beyond simply counting the hours

Where many trackers are content to measure duration, Garmin delves into the heart of nighttime mechanics. The armband does more than distinguish between light, deep, and REM sleep phases. It looks for much more detailed indicators, true reflections of our general state of health.

The program includes essential features such as continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation (SpO2), analysis of breathing variations, and above all, monitoring of heart rate variability (HRV) status. This indicator, increasingly popular with athletes and wellness experts, is a gold mine for assessing the body's true state of recovery. A balanced HRV is often a sign that the body is effectively recharging its batteries.

In addition to these measurements, skin temperature monitoring is also available, providing valuable data that can alert you to changes related to the environment, intense physical activity, or even possible signs of illness. For women, this feature also offers more precise monitoring of the menstrual cycle, with refined ovulation estimates.

A smart ecosystem for an optimized day

In the morning, all this information is synchronized with the Garmin Connect app and compiled into a personalized Sleep Score out of 100. The other real strength of the Index Sleep Monitor lies in its ability to integrate with the Garmin ecosystem. "Worn every night, this smart armband provides detailed sleep data and a more holistic view of fitness and recovery to start the day," emphasizes Susan Lyman, vice president of marketing and sales at Garmin.

In short, nighttime data feeds into key indicators like Body Battery, which assesses your available energy level for the day. Paired with a Garmin watch during the day, the user benefits from a 360° view of their fitness, where the quality of the night explains the next day's performance. The device even offers a smart wake-up function that, through gentle vibrations, will wake you from sleep at the most opportune moment in your cycle, within the window you have defined.

Finally, the new Garmin device claims a battery life of seven nights and simplified maintenance (the module is removable for machine washing). Available in two sizes at a recommended retail price of 169.99 euros, the Index Sleep Monitor could well appeal to those who are put off by bedtime watches, and convince data enthusiasts that sleep is, more than ever, the central pillar of performance and health. For others, there are also connected rings like the Galaxy Ring, which also focuses on sleep.
