Unable to install an iOS update on your iPhone due to insufficient storage? Apple has found the solution

With iOS 26, your iPhone will automatically reserve a portion of available storage space, which will be allocated to the installation of future updates. You will no longer need to delete photos, videos, or apps to upgrade to the new version.

Unable to install an iOS update on your iPhone due to insufficient storage? Apple has found the solution

Between iCloud and 512GB or 1TB storage configurations, Apple offers its customers a number of solutions so they don't have to worry about the space they have left on their iPhone. The problem is that not everyone has access to it, particularly for cost reasons. And as the size of photos, videos, and apps continues to grow, we can quickly find ourselves at saturation point.

Such a situation is frustrating for both the user and Apple. Without free storage space, some will choose to forgo installing updates, which doesn't help anyone. It's in Apple's best interest to ensure your iPhone has the latest security patches and features. Aware of the problem, Apple has integrated a new feature into iOS 26 to ensure that it always has space to install the next updates that become available.

iOS 26 reserves storage space for updates

In the patch notes for the iOS 26 beta, the option is described as follows: “Based on the amount of free space available, iOS may dynamically reserve update space so that automatic updates can be downloaded and installed successfully.” This means users will no longer need to remember to save some space for a new update or delete items from their iPhone when an update is deployed.

It is not yet known how this feature will behave exactly. Will users be warned that some storage space is reserved for system updates? Is it possible to disable this option? If storage space is running low, will iOS 26 warn us that it's best to free up space? We'll have to see it in action to find out for sure.
