Google's Phone app may be getting a new way to answer and end calls in an upcoming update. If it happens, users will likely be notified of the change. But you'll still have to be careful... or you risk finding yourself in potentially embarrassing situations.
Google could soon change the way we answer and hang up our Android smartphones. At least in the company's official Phone app. Our colleagues at 9to5Google claim to have found several lines of code to this effect while analyzing the latest beta version of the program.
For now, Phone allows you to answer a call by swiping upwards. Hanging up is done simply by pressing a button. But we can see that Google has been looking to change the way we interact with incoming calls for some time. Last year, some testers noticed the appearance of “Reject” and “Answer” buttons on the interface.
Google is rethinking the way we answer or hang up on Android smartphones
The application still allowed you to answer calls with the same gesture. But we clearly need to prepare for a radical change, if we are to believe another test conducted a little earlier this year, and what emerges from the code of Google Phone version 177 analyzed by our colleagues. Indeed, the firm introduced a new pill-shaped interface a few months ago in another beta when the mobile rings.
This element replaced what was at the bottom of the screen. To accept the call, you then have to swipe to the right. While a swipe to the left allows you to reject the call. This new interface, tested in March in version 166, has not been activated in the stable versions of the application. At least not to date. Because it seems that the idea is indeed catching on.
Alongside another option that answers the phone by tapping it. In version 177, there are two lines of code that indicate the ability to choose between the new answer gesture and the ability to tap the screen to answer. You will therefore need to be very careful to select the mode that suits you best in the application settings.
And above all, get used to this new gesture – which may well cause you to hang up or answer by mistake for a few days if you forget it. The arrival of this new feature in Phone by Google should a priori coincide with the transition of the application to the new Material 3 Expressive design language.
