Google has bad news for Pixel 6a owners. A mandatory update will negatively affect their battery. We explain why.

Your Pixel 6a will lose battery life and there's nothing you can do about it

Things are heating up for the Pixels. In the literal sense of the term for the Xa models, the more affordable range of Google smartphones launched in 2019. The more time passes, the more alarming reports multiply. It all started last January, when the Pixel 4a received a surprise update that significantly reduced its battery life. At first, the Mountain View company didn't explain this, but many saw it as a way to avoid the battery swelling problems noted by several users.

It wasn't until March 2025 that we had confirmation when Australia recalled all Pixel 4a models due to significant overheating risks. Two months later, the same thing happened again. This time, it was Pixel 6a models that spontaneously caught fire. The incidents were certainly isolated and fortunately not serious, but the situation was clear, and Google had to react. It's now a done deal with a solution that Pixel 6a owners clearly won't like.

Your Pixel 6a's battery will lose efficiency whether you like it or not

Just like with the Pixel 4a, the Pixel 6a will receive an update that will reduce battery capacity. Google doesn't hide this and clearly explains the purpose of the move: to prevent overheating issues and what they cause. The company doesn't stop there, as even after that, it recommends requesting a replacement for your Pixel 6a's battery. A dedicated page will soon be online to guide users through the process.

A Google spokesperson told Android Authority that, in theory, not everyone is affected: “A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce charging capacity and performance once the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We will contact affected customers next month with all the information they need to resolve the issue.
