Google TV televisions will show summaries of the news generated by Gemini

Samsung, LG and other TV manufacturers are all about generative AI. At CES, they all announced new features powered by this technology, so as not to come across as the usual old-fashioned type (even though AI “plain and simple” has been at the heart of image and sound enhancement systems for years). Microsoft is obviously involved, with Copilot, which will be used for LG’s new search engine, for example.

Google is not to be outdone. Gemini will integrate Google TV, the operating system for connected TVs widely used by manufacturers. The AI model will improve understanding of natural language when searching for content; it will also help to better integrate YouTube.

Google also showed a new summary of the day’s news that is displayed on the TV. It relies on a cocktail of YouTube videos and summaries churned out by press partners — with all the problems of misunderstanding and misinformation that this can imply.

An “always-on” mode is also making its appearance. Using motion sensors, a television can detect the user’s presence and display personalized information as they pass by, such as the famous news summary and weather forecast. TCL will be the first manufacturer to offer this new feature at the end of the year, with Hisense following in 2026.
