If you ever find yourself listening to music or watching a movie together on the same iPhone or iPad, you no longer need to share an earbud.
You may not know this, but iOS and iPadOS are fully capable of sharing audio from one pair of AirPods to a second pair of AirPods (or Beats headphones).
The headphones that support audio sharing on iOS/iPadOS are:
- AirPods (all generations)
- AirPods Pro (all generations)
- AirPods Max
- Beats Fit Pro
- Beats Flex
- Beats Solo Pro
- Beats Solo Wireless
- Beats Studio Wireless
- Beats
- Powerbeats
- Powerbeats Pro
- PowerbeatsWireless
Sharing audio to a second pair of headphones is easy. The iPhone or iPad owner simply connects their AirPods, starts playing content, and enables audio sharing with the secondary pair of headphones. The process is straightforward and will only take a few seconds.
1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad
Start by connecting your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad. Insert each earbud into your earbuds and start playing audio or video content on your device.
2. Start sharing audio
Then tap the AirPlay sharing button from the Lock screen or Control Center. Since your AirPods are already connected to your device, you will need to press the "Airpods of xxx" button. Then select the Share Audio option displayed under the name of your headphones.
3. Connect the second pair of AirPods
Now place the second pair of AirPods near your smartphone and press the Share Audio button.
Your iPhone or iPad may ask you to press the case of the secondary AirPods to activate the pairing mode of the latter. Then wait a few moments for the connection of your device with the secondary pair of AirPods to be established.
4. Control the volume on AirPods
Now that you’re listening to (or watching) content together on the same device, you’ll probably want to control the volume in your headphones. The volume can be adjusted independently on either pair of AirPods connected to your iPhone or iPad.
To control the volume on each of your headphones, expand the Control Center, and hold your finger down on the volume bar. In the new window that appears, two sliders to control the volume on each pair of headphones are available. You then just have to slide one or the other to adjust the volume.
In addition to volume management, sharing audio between two pairs of headphones on iOS or iPadOS allows you to choose, for each pair of headphones, the noise control mode (if you are using AirPods 4, AirPods Pro (all generations) or AirPods Max). To do this, you just need to touch the noise control button located under the pair of headphones concerned to choose the mode that suits you.
