ÇIt goes and it comes back… Then it goes away again, never to come back. MultiVersus will go down in history as one of the biggest emotional rollercoasters for platform fighter aficionados. The teams at Player First Games and Warner Bros have just announced the title's definitive closure in the coming months. In a genre where Super Smash Bros reigns supreme, MultiVersus had all the assets needed to become a serious competitor: characters from cult licenses, effective artistic direction, original gameplay… However, Warner Bros Games could not help but sink yet another promising production with an outdated live-service business model.
After a rather convincing first beta in 2022 and 2023, MultiVersus took a one-year break with the promise of returning more substantial than ever in the summer of 2024. These few months were enough for the Warner Bros Discovery group to inject into this title the same ideas that would cause the downfall of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Despite a well-reworked gameplay base, the platform fighter quickly lost the attention of players due to a boring seasonal progression system and abusive microtransactions. Even the addition of characters like the Powerpuff Girls or Beetlejuice was unfortunately not enough to remotivate players.
MultiVersus will bow out at the end of its fifth season, which will run from February 4 to May 30, 2025. Microtransactions are already disabled and the content of this final update will be unlock for free. After this grace period, the few remaining players will be able to continue enjoying the fighting game in an offline version, provided they take a few precautions.
How to keep access to MultiVersus after its closure?
As of May 30 at 6 p.m. (French time), the MultiVersus servers will be permanently closed, making the title playable only offline. This version will only offer the local combat mode, playable against the AI or with three other friends. To access it, users will have to log into the game one last time between February 4 and March 30 so that a local save file is saved on the servers of the chosen platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or Epic Games).
It is however specified thatplayers will only have access to the content obtained before the closure, which will permanently block entire chunks of the game, even after its disappearance. This controversial choice until the final moments reflects the recent strategy of Warner Bros Games, which seems determined to make us forget its projects one by one. MultiVersus had all the makings of a gold mine for the entertainment giant, but the title will never have the chance to shine at the height of its potential. In 2025, it is high time for the live-service model to disappear in favor of healthier and more sustainable alternatives.
