Nintendo Switch 2: offbeat release date? All about the latest rumors

Nintendo Switch 2: offbeat release date? All about the latest rumors

Among Nintendo fans, impatience is building. After years of rumors, it seems that this time is the right one. The Nintendo Switch is preparing the ground for its successor, a device that still keeps many secrets about its “identity”. Attention all those who are waiting for it like the messiah, the next Nintendo console is starting to take shape. We take stock of what we know according to the latest rumors.

What will be the specific features of the Switch 2?

Several sources have spoken out recently to reveal important details about the composition of the Nintendo Switch 2, as leakers like to call it. Given the success of the hybrid format of the Nintendo Switch, the company would be going for the same console model, both portable and living room. This is a completely plausible rumor, and even extremely probable, which should attract an equally diverse audience, but mainly families.

Another piece of information that is important is that the Nintendo Switch 2 should still have a port for game cartridges. The manufacturer does not intend to say goodbye to physical copies at a time when dematerialization is increasingly present. However, we do not know if the cartridges will have the same format as those of the Nintendo Switch, so backward compatibility is not yet guaranteed between the two generations.

What screen will the Switch 2 have?

A portable console necessarily means a game screen integrated into the console. After a classic version with an LCD screen and a high-end version with an OLED screen, we thought that Nintendo could return to its first loves with an LCD screen proposal. This would allow it to minimize production costs (and therefore the sale price).

The latest rumors, however, speak of an OLED screen, if we are to believe the Korean site Choson Biz. It would be supplied by Samsung, the market leader. Nintendo may not need to make a choice and offer both versions for sale at launch. No one is saying anything about the size of the panel or the technologies used, but we should logically have a notable improvement in terms of quality.

How powerful will the Switch 2 be?

This is the whole debate that worries fans. Nintendo is known for being a generation behind its competitors Sony and Microsoft in terms of pure technological power. Even today, the Nintendo Switch's performance is criticized regardless of the game, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom being the best examples of what the console can do best.

Gamers are therefore dreaming of a famous "pro" version that allows at least to play in 4K on a television and in 1080p on a portable screen. If we know nothing about all this, it seems that the power of the Switch 2 is already compared to that of the PS4, 3 years after the release of the PS5. Nintendo will therefore still be dead last in the race.

When will the Switch 2 be released?

Obviously, since none of these rumors have been confirmed, no release date has even been officially mentioned by Nintendo. However, the latest information received by players indicates that the Nintendo Switch 2 could finally see the light of day in 2025, after having been mostly expected for 2024.

Indeed, a Brazilian journalist spread this rumor in a report, which was subsequently corroborated by other reliable sources of English-speaking media. More precisely, estimates have the Nintendo Switch 2 released during the fiscal year 2024, but also during the calendar year 2025. This gives us a 3-month window from January to March 2025.

Some time ago, some developers claimed to have received the development kits, which suggested a release a little earlier than that. But recent events have supposedly put an end to this hypothesis. No one has confirmed whether this is a delay or the original release date, but it certainly shatters the assumption that the console will be released before Christmas.

This wouldn't be so surprising when you consider that the first Switch was also released around this time of year. It remains to be seen when Nintendo will officially launch, with Switch sales only slightly down after 7 years of existence. Has the company already created its ultimate console?
