Nintendo Switch: Free fall in 2023?

Nintendo Switch: Free fall in 2023?

For the first time, Nintendo has recorded a rather catastrophic year in terms of its growth. The sales figures for all consoles have just been released, and there is one manufacturer more to be pitied than the others. Indeed, Nintendo is taking the hit and is recording an 18% drop in sales of its Nintendo Switch internationally compared to the previous year.

This is an even more painful fall as the console is placed just behind the Xbox Series X and S, which still recorded a 15% drop in sales. This is surprising data, given that until recently, the Nintendo Switch was still selling like hotcakes. Could the rumors surrounding the Switch 2 have slowed down sales in anticipation? Any explanation is still possible. The one that we will remember is that it is time to pass the baton.

No growth, but a certain stability

The most disastrous thing in this story is that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was unfortunately not enough to boost players' enthusiasm. The game sold at several million copies, but it was clearly not enough to convince those who did not yet own a console.

It is also good to remember that the Nintendo Switch currently holds a large market share compared to its competitors Xbox and PlayStation, so it is normal that its growth decreases over time to stabilize. In terms of pure numbers, the Nintendo Switch is not far from Sony with 16.4 million Switches sold, compared to 22.5 million for the PlayStation manufacturer. Xbox has sold 7 million consoles.

The time for the Switch 2 has well and truly come

For several months, rumors surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 have been intensifying. And for good reason, it seems that the timing is perfect to revive the firm's hardware sales, after a more than complete cycle for the original console released in 2017. After 132 million consoles sold in total, Nintendo also seems ready to turn this page in history.

According to the latest leaks, the Switch 2 could arrive much earlier than expected - which would be an excellent strategy for the firm. Some are talking about the first quarter of 2024, while others are sticking to their guns and talking about a release at the end of the year. Still, it is eagerly awaited, it and its next exclusives (hello Mario Kart 9).
