The video game industry is undergoing changes, both in its structure and its future. Sony, which owns the prestigious PlayStation brand, wants to reaffirm its desire for conquest by explaining that emancipation from the console sector alone is necessary. Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's CEO, explains to the microphone of the Norges Bank Investment podcast that the diversification of platforms is an essential component of Sony's future:
“In short, it will be omnipresent. Wherever there is computing, users will be able to play their favorite games, transparently. Gamers will be able to find support to play in different spaces. PlayStation will remain our flagship product, but we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and cloud gaming.”
However, the businessman does not explain what plans are being put in place to support these ideas. No figures have been shared. We are therefore still in the dark about the method of conquest.
In 2022, Sony announced that it wanted to focus on the PC and mobile gaming market. Historically, the firm has had almost no influence on the iOS and Android platforms, and only releases its games on PC after several years, and only its most profitable franchises. The new strategy is for 50% of games to land on these two platforms, 30% on PC and 20% on mobile.
We had not heard anything until this statement. Sony has a knack for conducting its activities in secret. As for cloud gaming, this is an interesting turnaround, at a time when Xbox has one of the largest market shares, and even Netflix is working on the subject. PlayStation is not afraid to be the last to arrive, and this is thanks to its huge community of loyal players, present at all the appointments (or almost).
Trump cards up its sleeve
We must not forget that Sony does not only bet on games, it is also one of the three major manufacturers in the field. This could also explain its delay on certain subjects related to the service sector, a gap that its direct competitor has been quick to fill. The company can also count on its entire audiovisual part and its new PlayStation Productions label which accompanies the release of all its adaptations to cinema or television.
