A few days ago, The Verge confirmed the existence of the PS5 Pro technical sheet. Sony's next console is revealed through promises of incredible performance, all supported by cutting-edge technology. But to be able to enjoy it, games still have to keep up. This is why the American media outlet declares today that Sony has asked developers to consider creating two new modes.
One is called “enhanced” and the other is called “ultra boost”. They are not aimed at the same types of games, but both aim to make all titles compatible with the power of the PS5 Pro.
What is the “enhanced” mode?
Sony first asks developers to create a new graphics mode exclusive to the PS5 Pro, which combines the new PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) resolution revealed with the console's specs, with a 4K resolution, a frame rate of 60 frames per second and ray-tracing effects. But not everything is mandatory to get the “enhanced” label.
Indeed, a PS5 Pro Enhanced game could run between 1080p and 1440p at 30 frames per second on the base PS5, but between 1280p and 2160p on the PS5 Pro, still at 30 frames per second. This would then be considered an improvement for the PS5 Pro. Additionally, developers can enable ray-tracing effects to get the PS5 Pro Enhanced label without necessarily increasing the resolution or frame rate. Finally, if a developer wants to reach 60 frames per second at the same resolution, it could also be worth the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.
What is the “ultra boost” mode?
Any games that will not be eligible for the “enhanced” label will certainly be eligible for the “ultra boost” mode. This is a mode that allows games with a variable refresh rate (VRR) to run at a higher frame rate or resolution. The whole thing could also be more stable. But it won't work with all titles either.
Sony has reportedly warned developers that those running at a fixed resolution and graphics settings tailored to specific rendering resolutions won't see any improvements, as will those built using the PS5's older development kit (which therefore doesn't support PS5 Pro technologies like PSSR).
