Sea of Thieves on PS5: Understanding the game modes

It is not easy to jump on the bandwagon. This April 30, the game Sea of Thieves is finally available on PS5, after being released on Xbox and PC in 2018. It has been 6 years since players have had the time to tame the high seas of the most famous pirate title in the industry. Sea of Thieves is an incredibly entertaining game, which has accumulated updates over all these years. The players themselves are not new to it. So how can we understand the ecosystem of such a complete and complex multiplayer game? Here's a quick guide to help you out.

Simulation: The Life of a Real Pirate

In terms of dynamics, Sea of Thieves should be divided into two parts. The first consists of exploring, collecting treasures, attacking other players, in short the life of a real pirate. It should not be forgotten that Rare Studio's first game is a simulation game before being an adventure game. There is a very important lore in the title, reinforced by extreme attention to detail and an economy with many mechanisms whose subtleties you will learn during your travels.

The part centered on exploration and simulation is essentially based on your earnings and your reputation. Your player level increases as you pillage and attack. To do this, nothing could be simpler than letting yourself be guided by the maps and your desire to sail. It is absolutely not necessary at the beginning to force yourself to complete specific objectives, simply sailing and shooting at what moves is already a first step. The rest will follow.

If you want to follow your instincts and go to sea, you have the possibility to do a myriad of things. The guild brings together all types of activities that can be done to increase your reputation and level. Whether it's the Reaper Pavilion, the merchants or the shrines, all paths are available.

Narrative: the Fables of the Buccaneer

If you need a narrative framework to tie you into a game, Sea of Thieves has also thought of you. Indeed, the game includes a second large part dedicated to the Fables of the Buccaneer. Each fable represents an immersive story that guides you through a quest via narrative objectives. As in a classic adventure game, each step brings you a visible progression, until the resolution of the fable where you can resume a classic navigation, sell your objects/chests or leave for another guided quest.

Rare does not forget its competitive nature. Each fable, which has a lifespan of several hours, has easter eggs and hidden objectives. Some must be completed several times to unlock special rewards. Everything is obviously optional, and we must admit that we prefer to focus on the story bits rather than the pure simulation aspect.

The only trick is that these two major parts of Sea of Thieves are in the same place. When you launch your game, click on the “Play” tab and go to “Adventure”. You will then appear at a random outpost that has all the entities in the game each time. To start your free adventure, go wherever you want. But to start a fable, you will have to find the Castaway on the beach and vote for the fable you want to start. You will immediately be guided by quest objectives, and sometimes even transported to specific, closed worlds.
