Super Mario Run is not dead: Opus Wonder invites itself into mobile game

Thanks to the undeniable success of the Switch since its launch in March 2017, Nintendo has made us forget its strange experiments in the mobile gaming market. In 2016, Shigeru Miyamoto was invited to an Apple Keynote to present Super Mario Run, the mascot's first official mobile game. Alongside Miitomo launched in March of the same year, this Mario game with gameplay as simple as pressing the screen was to mark the beginning of a new era for the Kyoto firm. Faced with the explosion of mobile games, the company wanted to follow the movement to install its biggest licenses on smartphones. Unfortunately for Nintendo, this project is far from having borne fruit.

The strange social network inspired by Mii and Tomodachi Life only lasted two years before closing its doors. The same goes for Dr. Mario World, which disappeared after two years of good (?) and loyal service. The market European will not even have had the right to discover the RPG Dragalia Lost, the studio's first attempt to establish an exclusive license on smartphones.

However, irreducible applications remain. Fire Emblem Heroes occupies a place of choice in the world of gacha games, alongside Animal Crossing Pocket Camp. Mario Kart Tour has separated itself from the lootbox system and no longer offers exclusive content. Among all these applications with updates regular content updates, Super Mario Run is also still present, but more discreetly. However, that was without counting on a surprise update adding a flagship mechanic from Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

The arrival of the Wonder Flower

As of today, the flower that is the source of miracles in the latest installment of Mario's adventures is coming to the mobile game. Until March 14, players (if there are still any) of Super Mario Run will be able to summon Wonder Flowers in the Rally Toad levels. An official video shared by the Nintendo Mobile channel – which still exists against all odds – allows you to discover the effect of this new power-up in the game. Unfortunately, it will not activate the same psychedelic hallucinations as in the Switch game.

However, it will play musical themes from Super Mario Bros. Wonder and will transform all the pieces into golden Goombas that can be defeated by touching them. Will this be enough to bring crowds back to the game? Probably not. It is still nice to discover this nod to a game that has just celebrated its seventh anniversary. To have fun with Nintendo licenses on mobile, players have every interest in turning to Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom, which remain the most popular adaptations to date.
