Google made a big splash last year with the Pixel 8 range: the manufacturer is offering 7 years of Android updates and 7 years of security updates. This gives the assurance of being able to use smartphones for a long time without fear of vulnerabilities, while taking advantage of the functions of future versions of Android. And the Pixel 9 also benefits from this long-term software support.
In contrast, software support for previous generations of Pixels seemed rather lackluster. Google was indeed committed to 5 years of updates for the Pixel 6, 7 and Fold, but with only 3 years of updates for Android, plus 2 years of security updates. A strange distribution that is not easy to understand and confusing for the user.
The search engine has finally done what it had to do: 5 years of Android updates and security patches for these devices. In a support sheet, we learn that these devices will be entitled to this software support from their release. This means that the Pixel 6/6 Pro/6a will receive Android 17, while the Pixel 7/7 Pro/7a and Pixel Fold will benefit from Android 18.
This does not mean that all the new features of these versions of Android will be available on these smartphones. Some of them may require more recent models. However, it's hard to be picky because everyone wins.
