The Switch 2 scheduled for September 2024? It's wrong

In this month of March 2024, the Nintendo Switch will officially celebrate its seventh anniversary. Gamers know full well that in console age, this means that the machine's days are numbered. This video game industry standard is all the more valid for the Switch, which entered the market with a certain delay in power. Despite everything, Nintendo's little hybrid has not failed to delight gamers. A true commercial success for the Kyoto firm, this console houses one of the best catalogs in the manufacturer's history. It will also have participated in to the new democratization of portable machines, now dominated by the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally and other PC consoles of the sort.

In order to face these behemoths, Nintendo will have to unveil the console that will succeed the Switch. This famous “Switch 2” has been the source of rumors and speculation for several years now. The manufacturer having skipped a mid-generation improvement in favor of an OLED version of the same machine, the hope of a more powerful console is omnipresent among gamers. According to the latest news, the Kyoto firm would have presented a first prototype of its console during a highly confidential meeting organized during Gamescom 2023. All the signs suggest that a launch in 2024 is possible and now a new leak has added fuel to the fire.

The Switch 2 in September? Possible but not certain

It only took two weeks for the first crazy leak of the year to surface on the web. A press release press release shared by Altec Lansing in a partnership with GameShark promises the launch of a cheat cartridge “coinciding with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2024.” This information spotted by Digital Trends has not failed to revive speculations even more. Is this really a leak made by mistake? Breaking the secret in such a way could have serious consequences, both for Nintendo and the author of the press release.

Unfortunately, investigations conducted by Eurogamer and Bloomberg into Altec Lansing seem to point to a masterfully organized publicity stunt. Clearly overwhelmed by the industry's reactions, the company finally admitted that it was “just guessing” about the release date of the future console. In CES time, Altec Lansing and GameShark have found the perfect way to slip their future product into the heart of all the headlines. This false leak therefore does not confirm the name of the console, nor its release date.

However, this does not change the high probability of a launch this year. The development kits have already made their way a path to third-party studios, and the absence of the Nintendo Switch logo in some trailers like the latest Professor Layton suggests that the console's announcement is imminent. As rumors of a Nintendo Direct in February begin to emerge, the big reveal could be closer than we think.
