All the spotlights were on Xbox this weekend. The Summer Game Fest has already had several presentations over the last 3 days, but not all of them were equal. As usual, gamers were particularly looking forward to the Xbox showcase, which gets the best exclusives in terms of revelation, and which shows off its best AAA and indie games.
In true Apple fashion, the studio even reserved a “one more thing” moment during which it revealed a final surprise game at the end of the conference. It's called "surprise," but in reality, rumors surrounding the event already claimed that Microsoft would announce the return of the Gears of War franchise. Specifically, the expected game was Gears of War 6, the sequel to the franchise that hadn't had a new installment since 2019.
Surprise, it wasn't at all in the studio's plans to offer us this title. Instead, we were treated to Gears of War E-Day, which brings two well-known heroes back to the forefront. Marcus and Dom share the screen in the cinematic trailer that was shared during the Xbox showcase. The two fighters face the same enemy hand in hand in a game that is already shaping up to be a prequel.
What is it about?
The first images obviously didn't show us any gameplay. Xbox did, however, give us some descriptive elements that shed some light on the content of this new game. Gears of War E-Day is what we can call an “origin story”, that is, a story that tells the beginnings of a main story. The prequel goes back to Emergence Day. This is the day when The Locust have emerged from the ground to attack and wipe out the human race.
Luckily, heroes Marcus and Dom are there to save the day. In the background, you can see that the trailer takes place during this coordinated attack. While Gears of War 6 is not in the news, the option that Xbox is offering us has actually been better received than this possibility. The game will bring back to the forefront some of the franchise's iconic characters, who had more or less disappeared in recent titles.
While the next generation took over in the last two games, these iconic headliners were sorely missed by fans, who watched Marcus and Dom evolve together for many years. As of yet, no release date has been announced for Gears of War E-Day, but we expect to see the game in 2025 at the earliest.
