Broadcast last year – in spring 2024, from April to June – on Crunchyroll, the first season of Kaiju No. 8 had made an impression and also left attentive followers of the adventures of Kafka Hibino waiting for a sequel and a season 2 scheduled for next July. While waiting for this one – still produced by the studio Production I.G, in charge alongside the studio Khara of animating the work written by Naoya Matsumoto for the first season – Crunchyroll has published on its networks and its YouTube channel the trailer for the film Kaiju No. 8, Mission Recon.
The latter does not revolutionize the genre initiated a few years ago by Japanese animation studios. Mission Recon will adopt the now traditional formula of the good old summary of season 1, a method always useful for those who would like to discover Kaiju No. 8 through this means – even if it means rewatching the said season themselves later – and which will refresh the memory of those who had followed its broadcast at the time. The idea will certainly be to cover the highlights of the 12 episodes available on Crunchyroll, without going into certain details.
See you in theaters on April 17 and 18
But Mission Recon will also have exclusive content, with a new episode, called: Hoshina's Day Off. As the official synopsis states: “Defense Force soldiers rarely get a break, and peaceful days off are precious! After training relentlessly for so long, Reno has forgotten how to relax. He runs into Hoshina, who seems to have plans.” Iharu and Reno decide to tail their superior, and go from surprise to surprise!
Mission Recon will run for 119 minutes and will be available for two days in theaters, April 17 and 18, 2025. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will obviously distribute the film. As a reminder, Kaiju No. 8 plunges us into a Japan infested with kaiju, giant monsters. The hero, Kafka Hibino, is on a mission to get rid of the carcasses of these creatures. As a boy, Kafka dreamed of joining the Defense Forces, something his childhood friend Mina Ashiro made possible. After meeting an aspirant, Reno Ichikawa, Kafka decides to retake the entrance exam. But while cleaning a carcass, the duo is attacked by a kaiju, resulting in the subsequent – and the ingestion of a small flying kaiju – ability for Kafka to transform himself into a Kaiju!
While waiting for the movie and season 2, all 12 episodes of season 1 of the anime are available on Crunchyroll, which also publishes the manga.
