After the 3 -body problem, another Liu Cixin adaptation under construction

In 2024, Netflix presented its ambitious science fiction epic The Three-Body Problem. With the creators of Game of Thrones at the helm, the American platform hoped to create a serial phenomenon worthy of the two creators' reputation.

With a $160 million budget and a first season that called for more, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's proposal did not, however, achieve all of its objectives. Its audience figures did not allow it to stand out among the most-watched series in the platform's history. The Three-Body Problem has nonetheless contributed to the public's awareness of author Liu Cixin, and this popularity has not fallen on deaf ears.

The director of Black Dog, Guan Hu, is preparing an adaptation of another of the novelist's works. According to information from Deadline, he will tackle a short story from the collection "To Hold Up the Sky". It consists of a collection of eleven science fiction stories. This isn't the first time one of these tales has been adapted; The Village Teacher inspired the 2019 Chinese film Crazy Alien.

Russia vs. NATO

Guan Hu will be focusing on the short story, titled Full-Spectrum Barrage Jamming in English. The filmmaker will immerse himself in an electronic conflict between communist Russia and NATO forces. The story will focus particularly on the race to technological weaponry led by Russia while its enemy is making considerable progress in the field.

For now, we don't know much about this project except that it will be one to watch closely. Guan Hu made his mark with Black Dog in 2024, winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes. It was released in theaters on March 5 in France.

Moreover, the director is still drawing from the Chinese repertoire with the adaptation of In a Thousand Words by Liu Zhenyum published in 2009. The acclaimed novel was already brought to the screen by Liu Yulin in 2016. It will follow a lonely man from Yanjin County in the early 20th century who sets out on a long journey. A century later, his grandson will follow in his footsteps.
