Connected ring: Samsung wants to make the galaxy ring a thermometer for all

Samsung has just filed a new patent for its connected ring, the Galaxy Ring. A way to understand what the Korean brand wants to focus on for the next generation of its ring, the first of which was released last year.

According to documents published by WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and first discovered by 91Mobiles, Samsung is looking to integrate a temperature sensor into its connected ring. A more complete integration, that said, than what one can imagine from a connected ring.

To go further than the competition, notably Oura Ring, Samsung wants its temperature sensor to be able to be used at any time by a simple movement. The Galaxy Ring has already introduced this notion of motion control, which allows it to remotely control a smartphone, for example to take a photo. With no button on the ring, controlling features can only be done through movement.

In addition to this triggering method, Samsung wants its upcoming Galaxy Ring to give users the ability to measure other people's body temperature by sticking the ring to their foreheads.

There are several limitations to such a system working smoothly and providing realistic measurements. Among them, the difficulty of not taking into account high temperatures that would not correspond to our body temperature. Among the examples highlighted by Samsung: holding a cup of hot coffee.

The other limitation still concerns the space in the ring for a new sensor. Compared to a connected watch such as a GPS sports watch, connected rings are very thin and must already integrate miniature sensors for heart rate, blood oxygen level, a gyroscope or an accelerometer.

Why measure body temperature?

Measuring temperature remains an essential element for a connected ring supposed to monitor our level of health. In addition to preventing an infection, even before the onset of symptoms, it allows us to detect abnormal variations (fever, hypothermia), to better monitor our sleep, menstrual cycles, or to obtain better stress management and recovery.

At Oura Ring, the rival of the Samsung Galaxy Ring, the detection of symptoms before the onset of symptoms has taken the form of a new feature, available since December 2024. With it, users can receive an alert, which indicates the presence of minor or major signs that could lead to an illness, or come from an infection. On this occasion, the brand also launched a new ring, its fourth, with measurements that are ever more faithful to reality.
