Google signs the biggest check in its history: 32 billion to buy Wiz, cybersecurity specialist

Wiz is one of the gems of the cybersecurity sector. Its cloud solutions are used by Amazon and Microsoft: the startup offers a platform that analyzes infrastructures hosted by AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle. In a very short time—the company was founded in 2020 in Israel—Wiz and its services have become indispensable.

Alphabet's biggest acquisition

This explains Alphabet's interest in the company. Last year, Google's parent company already attempted to acquire Wiz for a modest $23 billion. But at the time, Wiz executives and investors feared regulators would block the deal. The changing of the guard at the White House and Google executives' acquiescence to the Trump administration open the possibility of a green light.

That's why Alphabet is bringing its Wiz acquisition proposal back to the table, and the sum has increased considerably: $32 billion. That's almost three times the highest amount never paid by Google to buy another company (the previous record dates back to 2012 to acquire Motorola Mobility, a deal worth 12.5 billion).

But nothing is certain yet, and the approval of the American authorities is far from being in the bag. Andrew Ferguson, the new head of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), may be close to Trump, but he has also clearly indicated his intention to twist the arm of "big tech". Furthermore, Google must still sell Chrome, new administration or not. The European Union could also have its say. say in the transaction.

If the transaction is validated, Wiz will strengthen the Google Cloud division to improve the security of cloud services and the ability to use multiple clouds. Google promises that Wiz products and services will continue to be offered to its current customers, who are also competitors of the search engine.
