On December 12, at the closing of the Game Awards, Naughty Dog unveiled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, their new game and, above all, their first new license since The Last Of Us in 2013. After a rather impressive first trailer of more than four minutes, Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog, went over some details about the game during a recent interview.
Intergalactic: a game centered on religion
For now, the only thing we know about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is that the game will take us to the planet Sempiria, in the shoes of Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who will venture to this distant planet whose communication with the outside universe was interrupted hundreds of years ago. When the game was announced in December, Naughty Dog briefly mentioned that the game could focus on a new fictional religion, created specifically for the game.
A few hours ago, Neil Druckmann revealed more details to us during an interview on Sony's official YouTube channel. The opportunity for the co-president of Naughty Dog to give us some details. First of all, the game will of course be just as narrative-driven as the studio's previous games.
With the latest title, The Last Of Us Part II, the studio made some bold narrative choices, which inevitably divided the web: "For The Last of Us 2, we made some creative decisions that earned us a lot of hate. A lot of people loved it, but a lot of people hated the game," Druckmann said. With a touch of humor and irony, Neil Druckmann confirms that this will still be the case for Intergalactic with other divisive subjects.
Neil Druckmann specifies that the game will take place 2000 years in the future, in an alternative universe where the timeline diverges from ours starting in the 1980s. The co-president confirms that the studio has spent years working on the timeline and how religion has changed over the years in our world.
This unique religion will be established on the planet Sempiria. Jordan will discover for herself who the inhabitants and threats are that populate this remote and cut-off planet. The great particularity of Intergalactic is to offer a single character and not a duo as is the case in The Last Of Us or Uncharted. Naughty Dog's goal is to immerse the player in a solitary journey to feel this solitude.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet promises us a great adventure. For the moment, we still do not know when the game is planned, if it is for 2026 or later.
