It is the great digital phenomenon of the decade. For more than two years, live streaming has become a way of life in its own right, a profession or even the passion of many people around the world. Present for a while now, it is only since the coronavirus pandemic that livestreaming has become democratized and a leisure activity appreciated by all, even those who were furthest removed from these platforms originally.
And it is mainly through the gaming category that live streaming is making a name for itself and a place of choice. However, we know that with digital, everything moves very quickly, and streaming is no exception. If we are to believe the figures reported by Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet, this activity is in full decline and it is not likely to improve.
The report shows us that between April and June of this year, 273 million hours were broadcast on the Youtube Gaming, Twitch and Facebook Gaming platforms. This is 19.4% less than the previous year and 12% less than the previous quarter which ran from June to March inclusive. It also notes that 7.6 billion hours were viewed across all platforms, or 18% less than in 2021 and 8.4% less than at the start of the year.
A general decline, but Twitch does not lose its dominant position
A trend towards the decline therefore which goes back at least to the first half of the year 2021 and which only increases as the pandemic comes (more or less) to be controlled. A trend which does not however affect all categories, since “Just Chatting” is experiencing a 2% increase in hours watched. It is therefore in the field of gaming that the decline is more remarkable.
Unsurprisingly, Twitch is the most popular platform for streaming related to video games. 5.6 billion hours watched on this platform alone, which is three-quarters of the cake. The observation is even more obvious when we talk about the hours broadcast, which amount to 204 million, or 92% of the total. So all is not lost for everyone, and streaming is not immune to a resurgence in popularity. After all, it is the means of diffusion most highlighted by experts for the coming years.
