Who would have thought that the RPG subgenre would end up experiencing such a renaissance in the Mario franchise? With the release of the Super Mario RPG remake, the remaster of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and now a new installment in the Mario & Luigi saga, it goes without saying that fans of turn-based combat have been served. However, no one expected the two plumber brothers to return in a new adventure of the genre. After the closure of the AlphaDream studio in 2019, the future of these games seemed doomed. The surprise was therefore all the more striking when Nintendo announced The fraternal epic during its Direct last June.
Now that the release of the title – scheduled for November 7th – is fast approaching, the Kyoto firm has just published a large trailer of more than five minutes. We discover the region of this new adventure, Connexia, which will offer to explore many drifting islands with different resplendent biomes. The visuals are even more surprising than on the occasion of the first announcement. The development teams have perfectly succeeded in transcribe the characteristic artistic direction of the old 2D opus into a new 3D universe of all beauty. But since beautiful images are not enough to promise a good game, here is everything you need to know about the scenario and gameplay of this upcoming gem.
A return of the best mechanics in a unique world
Mario and Luigi will have to master their brotherly powers if they want to save Connexia and reunite all its islands. Brotherly Attacks are the heart of the franchise's gameplay, and they have never been as impressive as in this Switch opus. The independent control of the two characters with the A and B buttons is the charm of the combat system, but also of the puzzles during exploration. In The Brotherly Epic, new Duo Actions will allow you to throw fireballs and iceballs, transform into a ball or even a UFO to overcome obstacles and progress in the adventure.
As in every Mario & Luigi game, players will be able to discover new characters alongside their favorite heroes. Here is the synopsis of the scenario shared by Nintendo:
“A mysterious power has divided the world of Connexia into a multitude of small islands, and it is up to Mario and Luigi who are tasked with restoring unity. The two brothers will embark on an adventure aboard the Navisthmus, an island ship whose cannon allows you to propel yourself to reach islands as numerous as they are varied. Mario and Luigi's explorations and quests will take them to many different environments, from the tropical forest to cities overflowing with activity. Throughout their adventure, the two brothers will meet precious new friends such as Ampéria and Couchomb (who is absolutely not a pig), but also well-known characters from the Mushroom Kingdom such as Peach and Bowser.”
Once again, the adventure promises to be very busy and this title seems to deserve its title of epic. See you in four weeks to find out if this new opus really lives up to our expectations. The last original opus of the franchise, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros – released on 3DS in 2015 – is far from having achieved unanimity, thus leaving a significant pressure weighing on the Switch episode.
