You're not dreaming, the PS3 does indeed have an update. Sony has just revealed a very interesting patch note since it concerns not its current generation of console, nor even the previous one, but the one before that. The PlayStation 3 is receiving an update to its system 19 years after its release, which is rather exceptional in the industry.
Version 4.92 brings some minor bug fixes but also new features concerning disc reading. Indeed, the update seems to renew the key Blu-ray player encryption to allow you to play your favorite movies. Nothing to do with gaming, which says a lot about the consumption habits of PS3 owners.
As a reminder, Sony's console has not been manufactured since 2017. The only copies you can get are on the second-hand market or from specialist sellers. In August 2023, the PS4 will officially retire with the total cessation of its production in Sony's factories. It will then join its second life, that of retrogaming. Players use it either to play the games they love natively or for the multimedia features.
The power of retrogaming
The PS3 is probably still used as a DVD player today since these small devices are less and less on sale in household appliance stores. For ease of use, it is the consoles that often serve as multifunction machines. This update is therefore good news for all those who still own a PS3 since it means that Sony is not abandoning its old customers, even though we find ourselves two generations later. Who knows, maybe version 5.0 isn't so far away?
It won't bring the store back from the dead, though. The store closed its doors several months ago and players can no longer buy digital titles on the console or fund the digital wallet linked to the PSN account. This update therefore does not herald a renaissance of the ecosystem, although some are still hoping to see a revival thanks to backwards compatibility.
