For the past few days, The Electric State has been the subject of much discussion. Its enormous budget raises many questions about Netflix's investment choices. More than $320 million was reportedly spent to adapt the graphic novel by Simon Stäringlenhag, who also produced the series Tales from the Loop on Prime Video. With the fathers of Avengers: Endgame directing and Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt in the cast, success seemed assured. After all, this kind of mainstream production often has no trouble... rise to become one of the biggest successes in its catalog. While how the budget will be recouped remains a mystery, the audience figures should confirm the importance of these large-scale productions for the activities of the N rouge. However, when it comes to taking stock, it's a cold shower.
In three days, The Electric State attracted "only" 25.2 million users. A launch that still allows it to reach the top spot on the weekly podium, but not to be among the best launches in the history of the American platform. According to the newsletter Netflix & Chiffres, the science fiction film is only the 32nd on the scale of films offered on a Friday since June 2021. It is far behind Red Notice, The Adam Project or the recent Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. To give you an idea of the scale, The Electric State is just ahead of Rebel Moon: Part 1, which was widely considered a blip. Millie Bobby Brown is one of the stars of the company, however, Enola Holmes had made a launch at $29.6 million, while Damsel boasted more than 35.3 views.
Adolescence, a real hit of the week
Elsewhere in the new releases section of the red N, we unsurprisingly find the British production Adolescence. Between thriller and drama, Adolescence had no trouble getting people talking, firstly through its cinematic process (the long take) and then through its subject matter. By immortalizing youth violence, Jack Thorn and Stephen Graham's creation stood out. It thus achieves a successful start. 24.3 million views in just four days. That's better than Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, The Watcher, or The Night Agent.
What's rather remarkable is that the series hasn't benefited from a major promotional campaign. However, it should benefit from excellent word-of-mouth in the coming weeks and continue to make its way up the list of current hits on Netflix. Currently, it has a 98% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes for press and 90 on Metacritic.
