In 2021, Mortal Kombat returned to the big screen for the first time since the two duds of 1995 and 1997. Far from being a masterpiece, this new attempt at an adaptation still managed to meet with enough success to earn a sequel. Mortal Kombat 2 will hit American theaters on October 24, 2025, and is expected to be screened in our green lands around the same time. The film is therefore starting to give some news, which is rather good. Fans of The Boys who are missing Butcher will be able to find Karl Urban in an equally badass and crazy role, as he will be playing the famous Johnny Cage.
This character, extremely popular among fighting game connoisseurs, will also be essential to the storyline of this sequel. Franchise co-creator and director of NetherRealm Studios, Ed Boon, told Entertainment Weekly: “We finally see Johnny Cage. His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this film explores. He's an old Hollywood guy, suddenly thrust into this magical, ultra-violent world. Karl's portrayal is different from the Johnny Cages of our games in some ways. He puts his own spin on it, but I think it'll hit the mark.”
The story will unfold from Johnny's perspective, which promises to be a wacky spectacle, to say the least. Ed Boon even promises that the character's on-screen appearance “is ridiculously funny” and did not miss to be a source “of bursts of laughter” à during the first test screenings. However, viewers will be able to count on the presence of other cult characters who will reinforce the immersion in the world of Mortal Kombat.
Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan will be there
The exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly also reveals new glimpses of Kitana (played by Adeline Rudolph), as well as Shao Khan (played by Martyn Ford) and Scorpion (played by Hiroyuki Sanada). These visuals look pretty convincing and faithful to the latest games, but these details aren't enough to predict the film's success. After all, the 2021 opus wasn't bad, but it wasn't exciting either.
Will Karl Urban as Johnny Cage be the miracle ingredient of Mortal Kombat 2? See you next fall to discover this new adaptation in theaters. For now, the French release date of the film has not yet been revealed. This should accompany the first teaser which, we hope, will not be long in showing up.
