How long will we have to wait before slipping a folding iPhone into our pocket? Such a smartphone has been floating around the rumor mill for a while, and as usual, Apple prefers to take its time to deliver something successful, even if it means lagging behind the competition. The first Galaxy Z Fold dates back to 2019, after all.
An iPad mini inside an iPhone
Cheer up! This folding iPhone might not be long now. Mark Gurman has heard that the device is well advanced and is more or less scheduled for 2026, following the iPhone 18. Its design would be close to that of the Galaxy Z Fold, that is to say a "book" format with a large foldable screen inside and a screen on the outside.
However, we must expect a steep price: the Bloomberg snooper is indeed talking about $2,000, and complicated availability. It will take some time for the manufacturer's assembly line to reach cruising speed. If Apple waited so long to launch its first folding model, it could be explained by the company's desire to reduce the effects of the fold in the center of the internal screen as much as possible, in other words, to ensure that it is as invisible as possible.
The structural advances brought by the iPhone 17 Air — notably the fundamental work to reduce the size of components while maintaining good battery life — would be put to good use for this folding iPhone. Ming-Chi Kuo had reported some time ago that this smartphone would have a 5.5-inch external screen, and a 7.8-inch internal screen once unfolded. Or the same diagonal as an iPad mini.
