The Geek Journal is launching its Stream section!

Livestreaming, live broadcasting, or more commonly "streaming", is a discipline that is taking up more and more space in the daily lives of many geeks. The profession of streamer has become a future prospect for some, while millions of others try their hand at it out of pure passion and desire to transmit. At a time when live broadcasting has become an essential element of geek culture, we decided that it was time for us to get involved too.

Livestreaming, an activity Widespread but little-known

With almost 10 million monthly creators, and 31 million viewers on average, Twitch is one of the birthplaces of streaming, but it is no longer alone in the competition. The meteoric rise of platforms such as YouTube, Kick, and Facebook Gaming is evidence of the massive craze for live content. Initially confined to video games, the discipline quickly spread — largely thanks to lockdowns — to other themes. So much so that it is now possible to come across anything and everything on the platforms, from music to creative arts, board games, and even the daily lives of animals. Netflix has not escaped the trend, by broadcasting its series Baby Animals live last year.

Why this fascination with live content? Beyond the entertaining aspect, livestreaming offers real-time interaction between creators and their audience, thus creating dynamic and engaged communities. For example, the most viewed category on Twitch is “Just Chatting,” a catch-all space where creators chat with their audience on a variety of topics.

Despite its global popularity, live streaming remains an enigma for many. Whether we’re talking about business plans, techniques, or internal regulations on each platform, the field has many gray areas.
