Tickets-restaurants: these little-known rules that no one applies

Among the French people's favorite social benefits, meal vouchers rank high. However, they are subject to a number of restrictions that are little known to the general public and restaurateurs.

Geographically limited use

First rule that is often ignored: your meal vouchers are not a culinary passport for all of France. Their use is actually restricted to your workplace and neighboring departments. An exception does exist, however, for business trips, where your employer can provide you with a special exemption. In reality, almost no one complies with this rule.

It is also important to note that to accept a meal voucher, the establishment cannot just sell consumable products. It is necessary to obtain restaurateur status from the National Commission for Meal Vouchers (CNTR). Traditional restaurants, fast food outlets, as well as hotels with restaurants are eligible. commerce, fruit and vegetable retailers, food businesses (such as butchers, delicatessens, caterers, bakeries, pastry shops, etc.), restaurants and company canteens, as well as companies specializing in vending machines are also affected, at least until the end of 2026.

Personal and non-transferable

Contrary to popular belief, your meal vouchers are strictly personal. Therefore, there is no question of lending your card to your teenager or your partner for their weekly meals. Once again, few merchants actually check the identity of the holder. Be aware, however, that a picky restaurant owner could refuse your payment if you are not the direct holder of the voucher. No worries, however, if you are accompanying someone, it will be possible to purchase several meals.

The daily limit

In 2025, the daily limit for using meal vouchers is set at €25 per day. This amount is valid whether you use a card or paper vouchers. With the electronic card, however, it is possible to authorize a bank card relay, which allows you to automatically top up amounts over €25 from your personal account. While waiting for the uncertain arrival of a double ceiling, this strict rule applies to everyone.

Also note that unlike electronic tickets, which allow you to pay the exact price of your bill, paper tickets are subject to stricter rules: the merchant is prohibited from giving you change. You will therefore have to top up with cash or your bank card. A temporary exception, since the complete dematerialization of meal vouchers is planned for the end of 2026.

Weekends and Public Holidays

In theory, meal vouchers cannot be used on weekends and public holidays, unless your contract explicitly specifies that you work on those days. In practice, many restaurateurs turn a blind eye to this rule on Saturdays and public holidays.
