Towards the end of the keys? Google Wallet will soon be able to open the connected locks

After supporting the Matter protocol, Google is strengthening its involvement in the connected home by integrating the Aliro protocol into Google Wallet. This standard, launched in 2023 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), promises a unified and secure approach to unlocking connected locks with a smartphone or smartwatch.

Google Wallet compatible with Aliro, to simplify the opening of connected locks

Aliro presents itself as a universal communication protocol between access readers, such as electronic locks or gates, and user devices, such as phones and smartwatches. Concretely, it aims to replace multiple proprietary solutions with an open standard. The Aliro protocol emphasizes four pillars: simplicity, flexibility, security, and interoperability. It is notably supported by industry giants such as Apple, Samsung (via its Wallet since 2024), Google, Qualcomm and Assa Abloy.

Towards the end of the keys? Google Wallet will soon be able to open the connected locks

Version 25.11 of Google Play Services introduces support for the Aliro protocol via Google Wallet, both on Android and Wear OS. This update This update opens the door (got it?) to simplified use of connected locks, without requiring a proprietary third-party application. The initiative is based on a combination of contactless technologies: NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), and Ultra-Wideband (UWB).

A potential still untapped

For now, the actual use of Aliro in Google Wallet remains theoretical, due to the lack of certified locks on the market. This hardware obstacle suggests that only new devices will benefit from this compatibility, at least initially. In the meantime, this integration into the Android and Wear OS ecosystem demonstrates Google's desire to make its digital wallet much more than a simple payment tool.

Eventually, we can imagine that locking and unlocking your home, your building or even a hotel room could be done automatically, as soon as you approach with your watch or smartphone.
