Unsurprisingly, Snow White is a flop (for the moment)

Mickey Mouse has a problem with his new live-action film. As expected, given the harsh criticism it received before its release, Snow White isn't going to be a global box office hit. Marc Webb's film only grossed $87 million in its opening weekend worldwide. In the United States, Disney's biggest market, its revenues were only $43 million. If not, On the scale of the beginning of the year, not a huge flop, it must be noted that it is much less than the majority of proposals of the genre. For example, The Lion King had collected 191 million dollars in 2019 compared to 174 for Beauty and the Beast two years earlier. Snow White even did less well than Dumbo and its 46 million dollars. The film directed by Tim Burton is widely considered as the entertainment giant's worst-performing live-action film.

According to box office analysts' predictions, Snow White should have achieved a box office gross of 53 million on American soil alone. These already modest results ultimately fell short. And things aren't expected to improve in the coming weeks, as the film is enjoying less-than-enthusiastic reviews and therefore poor word of mouth. At a time when As we write these lines, the film has a 43% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the press, compared to 74% among spectators. On Metacritic, it has a score of 50 out of 100. Such a reception will undoubtedly not allow it to maintain its long-term status, unless a miracle occurs. But it wouldn't be the first time...

Mufasa as an example?

But Snow White doesn't only accumulate bad points. The film still has a better start than Mufasa: The Lion King. Offered at By the end of 2024, the film had grossed only $35 million on American soil. While the lack of success seemed obvious, Barry Jenkins' film had surprised everyone by maintaining its weekly run. At the end of its third week, it showed a drop in attendance of only 35% from one week to the next. With a budget of $200 million excluding marketing costs, the film telling the origins of the fratricidal war between Scar and Mufasa ended its run with $719 million.

For now, Snow White can still be remade. But at At a time when the company is multiplying live-action remakes, and Lilo & Stitch is promised a release this summer, does the public still have an appetite for proposals of the genre? Is Disney's strategy coming to an end? The worm is in the apple.
