Windows 11: Microsoft will still change the Copilot keyboard shortcut

Why keep things simple when you can make them complicated? Microsoft should once again shine in this area. The Redmond firm will once again use the Win + C keyboard shortcut to open the Copilot assistant (or other applications) on PCs running Windows 11.

The keyboard shortcut, which was once used to activate Cortana, was, after the demise of Microsoft's old voice assistant, recycled to allow users to quickly access Copilot. Before Microsoft decided to deactivate it a few months ago, after having explained that it wanted to evolve its Copilot as an application. The Redmond firm then decided to use a new shortcut, Alt + Space to open Copilot.

Microsoft is making your life difficult with Copilot

While Copilot was originally integrated into the bottom right of the screen (and opened in a side pane on Windows 11), Microsoft later decided to migrate its assistant in the form of a WebApp pinned to the taskbar. Consequently, this change led Microsoft to review the associated shortcut, considering it more logical to abandon the Win + C shortcut in favor of the Win + the number corresponding to Copilot's position in the taskbar. A problem that does not occur on PCs labeled Copilot+, the latter integrating a dedicated Copilot key that can be remapped.

But after further brainstorming, Microsoft teams finally decided to abandon, once again, the web application of its intelligent assistant. Microsoft now wants to transform Copilot back into an independent native application in its operating system. This is in any case what the leaker Phantomofearth seems to have discovered, who shared his discovery on Bluesky.

This change of position was apparently decided in order to offer a deeper integration of the assistant powered by artificial intelligence in Windows 11. And which would therefore justify the abandonment of the current Alt + Space shortcut, adopted only a few months ago, in favor of Win + C to open the intelligent assistant. It is not certain that Windows 11 users, who have had to change their habits several times, will appreciate the change that should be applied from here to in the summer next.
