With these new gemini functions, your smartphone becomes an eye for AI

With Project Astra, Google made a strong impression at Google I/O 2024. The American giant showed its vision for the future of AI and repeated the experience at MWC 2025. Finally, the firm is starting to roll out new advanced features for Gemini Live to allow its AI assistant to "see" the user's screen.

Gemini Live offers eyes to help the user

Two major new features are currently being rolled out. The first is screen sharing.

Gemini is now able to analyze the content displayed on the smartphone screen and answer questions about what it sees. The goal is to provide more precise and even more "intelligent" assistance for seamless interaction with AI.

The other new feature is live video, which allows Gemini to interpret the video feed from the smartphone's camera in real time. Again, the assistant is supposed to be able to answer questions about what it sees.

A Reddit user shared a video of Gemini's screen sharing feature on a Gemini smartphone. The video gives a glimpse of the effectiveness of the feature, which can read and interpret what's on the screen. A Google spokesperson, Alex Joseph, confirmed to The Verge that these new capabilities are being rolled out.

The Californian firm is not behind the times and had promised that these features would start arriving in March for Gemini Advanced subscribers. Indeed, you must be a user of the paid version of Gemini to benefit from these new features.

The AI Premium subscription costs 21.99 euros per month in France and includes access to Gemini Advanced, as well as enhanced integration of AI into Google services. It also includes other benefits linked to the Google One subscription, including 2 TB of storage space. At the time of writing, both features were not yet available in France on our devices.

Google takes the lead in AI

At the end of January, we reported that Google was already winning the AI assistant war. The deployment of these features confirms the search specialist's lead in this area. Amazon is just beginning to roll out its update. Alexa Plus is updated in the United States, while Apple has delayed the rollout of Siri. These two assistants are supposed to offer capabilities similar to those that Gemini is beginning to offer.

On the other hand, it is only just catching up with ChatGPT. OpenAI's virtual assistant has offered a "live camera" function for several months (end of January in France). It allows paying users to use the capacity to analyze visual content in real time.
