Star Wars Celebration is in full swing in Japan, an opportunity for the franchise to make a ton of announcements. But while all eyes are on feature films like The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars Starfighter with Ryan Gosling, it would be a shame to forget Disney+! Especially since the streaming platform has been single-handedly carrying new productions from this galaxy far, far away since 2019. After Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, it will be the turn of The Mandalorian & Grogu to relaunch Star Wars in theaters, with a release date set for May 20, 2026 in France. But this return to the big screen will in no way overshadow the programs still in development for Disney+.
Ahsoka will be one of the next projects to return to the platform, since Dave Filoni's feature film will conclude the Mandalorian era launched on the small screen in 2019, of which the series is a part. Season 2 had already been confirmed by the studio in January 2024, but filming of the new episodes is finally about to begin. The news was shared by Dave Filoni on stage at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. The director said that Carrie Beck, Lucasfilm's vice president of animation and live-action, is currently in the UK preparing for filming, which will begin after the convention.
No release date, lots of speculation
Unfortunately, Ahsoka fans will have to settle for this simple announcement. No information regarding the season's launch has been shared, which is hardly surprising given that filming has yet to begin. However, let's remember that even if the first batch of episodes was filmed in just six months at the beginning of 2022, we had to wait until August 2023 before discovering the series on our screens. Should we expect a similar timing for the next season? Nothing could be less certain.
The Star Wars production schedule for Disney+ isn't as busy as it once was, and the entertainment giant will likely be looking to release the new episodes before the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu. Thus, it is not impossible that Ahsoka season 2 will arrive on the platform before May 2026. Such a production rate nevertheless seems difficult to maintain. Depending on the themes addressed, these new episodes could also serve as an epilogue to Filoni's feature film, or even relaunch a new wave of live-action productions linked to Star Wars Rebels. In any case, we are already looking forward to seeing Ahsoka and Sabine back on our screens.
