It's the end of a myth on Netflix. While the series The Sandman, broadcast in 2022 on the platform, aimed to become a sprawling universe, the saga burned its wings faster than expected. After the failure of Dead Boy Detectives, and the ongoing legal cases against Neil Gaiman, The Sandman will only be entitled to a conclusion in the form of season 2, broadcast this year. The information had been confirmed earlier this year, it now officially announces its broadcast dates.
A two-part season 2
Season 2 of The Sandman will be broadcast in two volumes: Volume 1, consisting of six episodes, will be available from July 3, 2025, while Volume 2, which will have five episodes, will arrive on July 24, 2025.
This unprecedented breakdown is explained more by practical choices than by a real artistic desire. The development of the series encountered numerous complications after the accusations of sexual assault against its author. Unlike other projects, such as the excellent God Omens, which will ultimately have to settle for a concluding feature film rather than a new batch of episodes, The Sandman will be able to continue its production, already well advanced, and offer its fans a real ending. However, it is doubtful that other spin-offs are still in the pipeline.
What can we expect?
This final season, still directed by Allan Heinberg and produced by Jamie Childs, promises to be particularly intense. Dream, played by by Tom Sturridge, will have to face the consequences of his past mistakes during a decisive reunion with his family. Between gods, monsters and mortals, the Lord of Dreams will be confronted with impossible choices to save his kingdom as well as the human world he loves so much. The road to redemption promises to be strewn with pitfalls and could well cost him everything.
Alongside the main protagonist, we will find Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Charles Dance, Boyd Holbrook. New faces will enrich the cast of characters, promising an even more ambitious season visually and narratively.
End of the dream
Netflix has confirmed that this season 2 of The Sandman will be the last. Officially, showrunner Allan Heinberg has stated that the series was always conceived around Dream's story, and that the existing material from the comics wouldn't allow for a second season. However, it's hard not to see this as a direct consequence of the scandal surrounding its creator.
