Android 16 has a very special function to dissuade thieves

Google is experimenting with a new security feature for Android 16: automatic restart when inactive. Spotted in the Google Play Services APK (version 25.11.34) by Android Authority, this option is part of the developments in the Advanced Protection Program.

An inactive phone? You can count on Android

The idea is simple: if a phone remains inactive for three days, it restarts automatically. After this reboot, biometric unlocking (fingerprint or facial recognition) is disabled. A PIN or password is then required to access the device. This measure is intended to make it more difficult for thieves: they will only have a short window of time to bypass the protections before the smartphone becomes unusable.

This concept is not new. Apple has already introduced a feature similar auto-restart feature in iOS 18.1 (which differs from the location-based protection introduced by iOS 17.3, which had a major flaw).

On the other hand, GrapheneOS, a security-focused Android operating system, has long offered this option. So Google isn't just imitating Apple, but rather integrating a proven feature. However, there is no study yet measuring its deterrent effect.

A setting likely to evolve

However, there remains uncertainty about how this feature will be implemented in Android 16. Adjustments could be made before the official release, such as a reduction in the inactivity period before restarting (from three days to two, for example), or even other triggering mechanisms. For now, the mention is limited to Restarts device if it remains locked for 3 days.

At the same time, Google is working on other improvements to the Advanced Protection Program, including a new API and settings options to more easily enroll a phone in this security program. Apps will also be able to detect if a device is protected and adjust their behavior accordingly.

For now, these new features are not yet functional in the beta versions of Android 16. The stable release is expected in the second quarter of 2025, so they should not be long in coming. be experienced.
