Most Android cars are equipped with cameras, but few use them to record videos. Google has developed a ready-made app to change that. Problem: Can't download it yourself.
Modern cars are increasingly connected. They integrate touchscreens, smart sensors, and several cameras, intended for safety or driving assistance. However, even with all this hardware, very few vehicles allow the use of these to record the road like a traditional dashcam. To remedy this, Google now offers a solution designed directly for Android Auto. The American firm has developed an app for cameras compatible with cars equipped with the Android Auto system. This app allows you to use those already present in the vehicle to film journeys, just like a standalone dashcam. It is designed to be integrated directly into cars by manufacturers. Google specifies that it is "production ready" and fully customizable according to the needs of each brand.
The Google dashcam app for Android Auto cannot be downloaded
The Google dashcam app is not an application that you install from an app store. It must be integrated into the Android Auto system by the car manufacturer itself. It uses cameras available via standard interfaces (EVS or Camera2 API) and requires system permissions. Videos are saved by default to internal memory, but Google strongly recommends storing them on an SD or microSD card to avoid using up the vehicle's storage.

This application could encourage more manufacturers to offer a native dashcam function, where most have refrained from doing so until now for technical or commercial reasons. The system also allows you to configure the allocated storage space, the retention period of videos, and the application interface. Thanks to this initiative, Google will soon facilitate the adoption of a simple and useful security tool, without the need to add external hardware.
