Besides FF9 Remake, there was another surprise. You might never see it.

The last few years have been very prolific for Final Fantasy fans. Between a remastered collection of the first six games, a FF16 that dusted off the franchise with openly action-oriented gameplay, and above all an excellent FF7 Rebirth, fans have had plenty to keep them busy. Internally, the teams are working on the final installment of the remake trilogy, which should arrive much sooner than expected. However, there's another game that's on players' minds: the infamous FF9 Remake. Whether it's an open secret or a pipe dream, the title was one of the many projects to have leaked due to Nvidia's leak. While Square Enix still hasn't made its existence official, the Japanese publisher certainly had big plans for this iconic and beloved installment. Unfortunately, they're well on their way to falling to... water.

The magic risks dying out for the FF9 series

If you read our columns regularly, you will know that Square Enix had commissioned an animated series based on the game from the French studio Cyber Group Studios. A project that began in 2021 and of which the first images, as well as a presentation, had made the rounds on the Internet. This FF9 series was supposed to follow the adventures of six young black mages, all children of Vivi, an inseparable character from the game. Peacefully settled in Alexandria, their daily lives were turned upside down when one of them found himself frozen like a statue. It clearly had potential, but it seems that the FF9 series will never see the light of day.

Despite its quality projects, the French studio was in economic difficulty and was unable to turn things around. As our colleagues at Ecran Total have informed us, Cyber Group Studios has been placed in receivership. In other words, this means that no takeover bid has been successful and that the company's assets will be resold to pay creditors. The FF9 series should therefore be part of it, but its future remains uncertain for now. However, it is not excluded that the project will ultimately be transferred elsewhere, but if this is the case, we may not see Vivi and her gang on our screens for a very long time.

We hope that by then, Square Enix will finally decide to reveal FF9 Remake, which would indeed be a reality according to several reliable sources. The Summer Game Fest seems fitting! for an announcement that risks giving fans a shock.
