Content creators are Canon's target with the PowerShot V1 and EOS R50 V, two cameras designed for video. While vlogging harks back to the blogging trend of the 2000s, the video craze remains strong on social media, as evidenced by the success of platforms like TikTok and YouTube for vloggers and influencers.
PowerShot V1: a compact designed for vlogging
Compact cameras have been facing competition from smartphones for several years, but Canon continues to believe in it. The PowerShot V1 is designed for creators looking for a lightweight and easy-to-handle solution. This "pocket-sized" device weighs 420g (including battery and memory card) and measures 118.3 x 68.0 x 52.5mm.
It has features designed to enhance the video experience, starting with a 22.3MP 1.4-type CMOS sensor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus. It adds a 16-50mm f/2.8-4.5 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens and offers 4K recording up to 60 frames per second (fps) with crop (64%) and Full HD at 120 fps. Note that the camera can record in 4K at 30 fps without crop thanks to oversampling from 5.7K, which should improve image quality. Finally, an integrated fan allows for extended sessions without overheating.
In addition to optical stabilization, the PowerShot V1 adds a dual electronic station. Additionally, it can capture 10-bit footage with Canon Log 3. The PowerShot V1 adds a redesigned grip and a vari-angle touchscreen to facilitate normal or selfie shots. Its LP-E17 battery provides approximately 400 photos or 70 minutes of video recording. Aimed at beginner vloggers and users looking for an all-in-one solution, the Canon PowerShot V1 is priced at €999.
EOS R50 V: a hybrid optimized for video
Update of the EOS R50 launched Introduced in 2023, the Canon EOS R50 V is a compact and future-proof mirrorless camera. It features advanced video capabilities and compatibility with Canon RF mount lenses. The EOS R50 V features a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, combined with the DIGIC X processor, for shooting up to 4K at 60 fps with crop and 4K at 30 fps with 6K oversampling. There is also support for 10-bit YCC 4:2:2, as well as Canon Log 3 for color grading. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II uses a DIGIC X-based algorithm. on deep learning to detect and track various subjects (humans, animals, vehicles) across the entire sensor surface.
Canon's new hybrid camera features ergonomics designed for vlogging, with the addition of a REC button on the front for video recording. The tripod mount has also been improved to facilitate use in portrait or landscape mode. Canon announces a weight of 370g with memory card and battery, for dimensions of approximately 119.3 x 73.7 x 45.2 mm.
The Canon EOS R50 V is available from 809 euros or 1049 euros with the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ. This new lens will also be sold alone for 399 euros.
