Captain America: Brave New World, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has received mostly negative reviews. The critics' scathing reviews are incomprehensible to the director and screenwriter.

Captain America: Brave New World – Another Failure for the MCU

In recent years, the MCU has struggled to regain its early glory. Critics are becoming less and less kind to Kevin Feige's productions, and viewers are going to theaters less and less to discover new Marvel offerings. The proof is in Captain America: Brave New World

The film by Julius Onah has not managed to completely seduce the press and the audience. While the Marvel blockbuster is coming to an end of its run, the 4th installment of Cap's adventures will have only brought in $409 million in box office revenue.

It thus ranks third in the ranking of Captain America results at the cinema, ahead of First Avenger and its $370 million revenue and behind The Winter Soldier and its $700 million revenue.

On the ratings side, it's not much better. Brave New World has a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. On AlloCiné, the film barely reaches average with a score of 2.6 from both the press and the audience. Finally, on SensCritique, the film peaks at 4.9/10.

A misunderstanding from the director and the screenwriter...

Yet, despite these disastrous scores, Brave New World has some defenders. Some have pointed to Marvel Studios' desire to reconnect with old-school entertainment that crowned successes like the first Iron Man and the first Captain America.

During an interview with The Direct, Rob Edwards, one of the six writers credited with the script of Brave New World, defended the film and emphasized his incomprehension in the face of bad reviews:

It's not the first time this has happened to me. It's happened to me on some of my other projects. I even have friends who are critics. And I said to them, "I think you missed the movie. I think you made a mistake." Audiences clearly don't agree with the critics. I heard here and there people who said they loved it, and that they were going back to see it with their family or friends the following week.

A few weeks ago, director Julius Onah also reacted to the bad reviews surrounding Brave New World, speaking to Esquire:

We worked very hard on this film. We are passionate about what we are telling here. We told this story as faithfully as possible to my vision. I'm very pleased with it. People are seeing things that critics don't. What's important to me is the audience's experience. That the audience appreciates what they see.

Captain America: Brave New World is still in theaters. As a reminder, the film by Julius Onah stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America. The latter is at the center of a political plot orchestrated by The Leader. At the same time, Harrison Ford inherits the role of Thaddeus Ross following the death of William Hurt. A Thaddeus Ross who will reveal himself in a new form: the Red Hulk!
