Dragons: the live-action remake is already a sequel

Universal Pictures thinks it has bet on the right dragon. Two months before the release of the live-action remake of the 2010 animated film directed by Chris Sanders, the company announces that it is already working on on a sequel. It was during CinemaCon in Las Vegas that Dean DeBlois, director of the animated franchise and its live-action version, made such an announcement.

In addition to confirming the return of the development of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Universal Pictures is committed to a release in American theaters on June 11, 2027. We can expect that French audiences will be able to discover the adventures of Harold and Toothless a few days earlier. With such a schedule, How to Train Your Dragon 2 will find itself facing Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. As a reminder, the date is now set for June 2, 2027.

A new adventure for Harold

The first installment of what is shaping up to be a live-action franchise should focus on telling the same events as the animated film released in 2014. The story will follow Harold as he continues to soar through the skies with his faithful steed, Toothless. During an outing, our two heroes discover a secret cave that is home to hundreds of wild dragons, including the mysterious Dragon Rider. They will be forced to fight to defend their values and preserve the peace restored between humans and flying creatures.

The Dragons franchise delivered three installments to the cinema between 2010 and 2019. The films were great successes for the animation studio, which can boast of having collected 1.6 billion worldwide and been nominated for four Oscars. Universal is also banking heavily on this franchise beyond just the world's cinemas.

An epic franchise?

In a few weeks, on the other side of the Atlantic, Universal Pictures will open the doors to a revolutionary park called Epic Universe. The Dragons brand occupies an important place in this construction, with animatronic dragons to bring shows to life. A rollercoaste will also be on the program of festivities as well as a flat ride to allow visitors to experience the same flying experiences as Harold and his friends.

The release of these feature films therefore ensures that the company will be at the heart of discussions among spectators over the next two years. The upcoming arrival of a park in Europe also promises to bring the universe into a new era. It remains to be seen whether the public will respond to the opening of these parks and... in theaters.

The first film, which will be released on June 11, premiered at CinemaCon and received praise. For some internet users, Universal Pictures has hatched “the best live-action adaptation” to date. The performances of Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler were applauded, they lend their features to Hiccup, Astrid, and Stoik.
