It's time for streaming platforms to announce their April festivities. After a March that was rather lacking in new releases, aside from the excellent surprise Adolescence and the return of Daredevil, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple TV+ give us a good reason to stay cozy under a blanket and enjoy the latest thriller, comedy, and science fiction releases. Attention, some die-hard Gauls have invited themselves to the party...
Sweetpea – April 4 on Paramount+
The star of Fallout, a thriller that the platform promises to be twisted and comic, Sweetpea is one of those releases that we will be keeping a close eye on next April. Led by Kirstie Swain, creator of Pure, which aired on Channel 4 in 2019, the series promises to be one of those British gems that viewers will devour.
The story follows young Rhiannon Lewis, discreet and consumed by her insecurities. Pushed to the limit, she will change completely to make way for a new personality with murderous tendencies.
Government Cheese – April 16 on Apple TV+
On Apple TV+, there's no shortage of interesting series. A few days after the finale of Severance, the platform is devoting itself to the exercise of dramedy with Government Cheese. An actor already at the epicenter of an Apple TV+ production will also be starring in this unique series. David Oyelowo will play the patriarch Hampton Chambers. He played Sheriff Holston in the adaptation of Hugh Howey's novels.
In Government Cheese, he will play the head of an eccentric family who pursues impossible dreams. When Hampton gets out of prison, the reunion doesn't go as planned. During his absence, his wife and daughters have formed an unconventional family that his return could plunge into chaos.
Andor Season 2 – April 23 on Disney+
It's one of the most beloved series in the galaxy far, far away. After its critical success in Season 1, Andor returns to connect Cassian's journey to the events of Rogue One.
At a rate of three chapters per week, the new season will evolve into three new crucial moments in the life of the man who will contribute to the destruction of the Death Star. We can expect to see some characters from Gareth Edwards' film, starting with Forest Whitaker who will once again play Saw Gerrera. Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgård will also return alongside Genevieve O’Reilly and Adria Arjona.
Étoile– April 24 on Prime Video
Heads up for fans of Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel! Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino return to Prime Video to explore the world of classical dance. A dramatic comedy and immersion into the cutthroat world of the stage, Étoile could be the series we needed this spring.
The story follows the dancers of two world-renowned ballet companies who embark on an ambitious gamble. To save their historic institutions in Paris and New York, the two directors decide to swap their most talented dancers. Set to T-Rex's "Cosmic Dancer", one of Billy Elliott's signature songs, the series aims to attract the attention of those who are passionate about dance... as much as they are about hair pulling.
Asterix & Obelix: The Battle of the Chiefs – April 30 on Netflix
“It’s 50 BC. All of Gaul is occupied by the Romans… All of it? No! A small village of indomitable Gauls still resists the invader.” But for how long? More than two decades after his Mission Cléopâtre, Alain Chabat returns to the imagination of Goscinny and Uderzo. He will adapt Le Combat de Chefs with, we hope, the same genius as for the two friends’ adventures in Egypt.
Asterix and Obelix are in a delicate situation. Getafix has been hit on the head by a menhir and has forgotten the composition of the magic potion. Caesar learns of this and decides to organize a battle of the chiefs. According to the rules laid down in Gaul, the winner of the confrontation becomes regent of the village. Our indomitable Gauls will do everything in their power to remain free and not give in to the invader. The first reviews are particularly enthusiastic, we're stamping our feet...
