The foldable iPhone is expected to share many similarities with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold. But Apple is said to be adopting a feature that has been heavily criticized by its competitor.
Information about Apple's first foldable iPhone continues to trickle in. We already knew that the device would adopt a paperback format, like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold. We now learn that it should also include a feature that is not unanimously approved by the South Korean manufacturer's folding smartphones.
A report from leaker Digital Chat Station, which has sources within the Chinese production lines responsible for producing components for Apple products, tells us that the foldable iPhone should feature a front camera under the main screen (unfolded) of the mobile.
A poor quality under-screen photo sensor for the foldable iPhone?
This technology has been used by Samsung since the 2021 Galaxy Z Fold 3 and is still present on the current Galaxy Z Fold 6. The problem is that it is still far from mature, and the performance of this camera sensor is quite poor on Samsung smartphones. Hiding the lens under the display saves screen space, but it limits the ability to capture light, significantly reducing photo quality. In our Galaxy Z Fold 6 review, we even described this internal front camera as “miserable,” offering “horrendous image quality.”
Will Apple manage to improve the effectiveness of under-screen photo sensors? Nothing is less certain. This sensor can help with facial recognition or video calls, but you will probably have to use the external photo sensor, which will be integrated into a notch or a Dynamic Island, to obtain better results.
Furthermore, Digital Chat Station confirms that the internal screen (unfolded) would measure 7.76 inches, with a definition of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels). It would therefore be a little larger than the main display of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (7.6 inches). The external (folded) screen, however, would be smaller, at 5.49 inches, compared to 6.3 inches on the Z Fold 6. This could be a problem, as the external screen is still often used by users when they don't need a large display.
