The announcement of the renewal of Heartstopper was long overdue, but now Netflix has taken its viewers by surprise with an announcement that no one could have predicted. The romantic series adapted from Alice Oseman's graphic novel will not have a fourth season... Because the grand finale will take the form of a film. The platform with the red N has just shared the news on its networks to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the already cult series. The romantic adventures of Nick and Charlie are leaving the television format and now entering the realm of cinema. The feature film will adapt the sixth and final volume of the graphic novel Heartstopper, the publication of which is not even a matter of time yet.
Since the publication of the Webtoon is still not complete, its printing in the form of a final book will not be possible before the end of the year. Perhaps we will even have to wait until 2026. And this means that the newly announced film is still far from being included in the platform's catalog, despite the promise that this one is “coming soon“. We've all gotten used to it: the red N doesn't have the same notion of time as ordinary mortals and enjoys making us wait. In the meantime, and since this wait promises to be long, here's what we already know about this new project.
The actors are getting a boost
While Alice Oseman naturally returns to her place as screenwriter for this feature film, the actors who play Nick and Charlie are being offered additional responsibilities. Kit Connor and Joe Locke will also serve as executive producers. Netflix has hired Wash Westmoreland, a British director known for his work on Still Alice and Quinceañera, to direct.
“I am truly thrilled that we get to tell the end of Heartstopper's story. I am so grateful to everyone who worked hard to make this possible, as well as the incredible fans for their patience and passion. I can't wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion,” said Alice Oseman in a press release.
The Red N also shared a short synopsis, which won't tell the webtoon's readers anything new:
“As Nick prepares to go off to college and Charlie finds new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts set in, and their relationship faces... his greatest challenge.”
Filming is expected to begin this summer, suggesting a release in 2026, which will certainly accompany the release of the final volume in bookstores.
