Jujutsu Kaisen: [SPOILER]'s Defeat Explained by Manga Creator

The manga Jujutsu Kaisen ended in September 2024. But one question still haunted fans: why did Gojo Satoru, the strongest exorcist, lose to Sukuna? The fight between the two giants of shonen manga had set social media ablaze. The outcome, including Gojo's death, had left a bitter taste.

A frustrating death for fans

As a reminder, Gojo faces Sukuna after his release from the Prison Realm. This duel represents the ultimate confrontation: the strongest man in the exorcist camp against the king of plagues. At the end of the fight, Gojo is dead. And his death is rather trivialized, which frustrated many fans.

So, for months, fans have constructed theories. Some even thought Gojo would return. Others hoped for a last-minute twist. In the end, none of this happened.

He lost due to human error

But recently, Gege Akutami, the creator of the series, finally broke his silence. At an official exhibition in Japan on April 19, 2025, he revealed which really caused the downfall of his iconic character.

In fact, before facing Sukuna, Gojo manages to defeat Mahoraga, the most formidable cursed spirit summoned by Megumi. This victory, which was crucial, would have made him far too confident.

After defeating Mahoraga, Gojo thought that Sukuna no longer had any way to circumvent his Infinity. I think the usual Gojo would have sensed that something was wrong and could have avoided a fatal injury.

These words confirm what some suspected: Gojo lost because he lowered his guard.

A human error... and a tragic one

This isn't the first time he's been overconfident. During his youth, Toji Fushiguro managed to seriously injure him. At the time, Gojo was exhausted after several days without sleep, which cost Riko Amanai her life. It was this event that subsequently triggered Geto Suguru's betrayal.

Later, during the Shibuya arc, Gojo falls into Kenjaku's trap. He is sealed in the Prison Realm. However, without him, plagues ravage the city. The human losses are enormous.

A bold script choice

It must be recognized that killing Gojo this way was a risky bet. Many hoped for a balanced confrontation, a final exchange, a noble sacrifice... But the mangaka chose an almost absurd death.

As in reality, sometimes the end doesn't give warning. This choice underlines the violence of the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. No one is untouchable, not even Gojo!

Gege Akutami thus closes an important chapter and puts an end to speculation. Although late, this explanation offers a form of peace to fans.

And with this explanation, he transforms a shocking death into a narrative lesson. Because in the end, Gojo didn't just lose to Sukuna, but to himself.
