In barely a month, a British series called has shaken up Netflix's most-watched series rankings. With 124 million views, it has already established itself as the third most popular series in the English language. And this may just be the beginning.
A very good start
Released just a month ago, Adolescence didn't take long to win over audiences. In just four episodes, it has attracted tens of millions of viewers around the world. It has already surpassed hit series like Dahmer – Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer, relegated to fourth place.
There are now only two giants ahead of it: Stranger Things – Season 4 and Wednesday. But given the current momentum, Adolescence could well catch up.
Directed by Philip Barantini, Adolescence adopts a format where each episode is filmed in a single sequence shot. There is therefore no visible editing, no cuts. This immersive method gives the viewer the impression of being at the heart of the action, in real time.
The plot is quite relevant
The series features a 13-year-old boy accused of the murder of one of his classmates. From then on, everything collapses around him: his family, his therapist, and the police officer in charge of the investigation try to understand. What really happened?
The series highlights the flaws in the current education system, the secrets left unsaid in families, as well as the impacts of childhood trauma and hasty judgments.
Fake news surrounding the series
On Rotten Tomatoes, Adolescence has 99% positive reviews from experts. The public, however, remains a little more reserved, with 73% favorable reviews. The difference is likely explained by the political tension surrounding the series. Some see it as overly engaged in social criticism. Others denounce its controversial messages. Conspiracy theories have even circulated online.
Indeed, one internet user published a post claiming that this Netflix miniseries is actually "anti-white propaganda." According to him, the showrunner was inspired by a true story, specifically a knife attack that occurred last July in Southport, United Kingdom. He pointed out that the "real culprit, Black and migrant," was replaced by "a white boy." This theory took on a whole new dimension when the tweet was endorsed by Elon Musk. The showrunner, for his part, denied the allegations.
Will there be a Season 2?
Some psychologists have praised the awareness-raising aspect of this series, saying that every parent should watch it. Be careful, however, because Adolescence is not recommended for younger viewers, as some scenes are particularly disturbing.
Also note that the ranking of the most-watched series discussed here only takes into account series in English. International hits like Squid Game (in Korean) are therefore not included in this list.
Moreover, but for the moment, nothing is official regarding the sequel.
