The Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo concluded last night, providing an opportunity for Lucasfilm and Disney to take stock of their upcoming projects and make numerous announcements. Now that we have a better idea of the Star Wars universe's schedule for the next three years, here's a ranking of the 14 upcoming works, from least exciting to most promising.
#14 Simon Kinberg's New Trilogy
Despite the postlogy's failure, Disney and Lucasfilm have no intention of denying their own legacy. A new trilogy is currently in preparation. Writer and producer Simon Kinberg, known in particular for being one of the masterminds behind the X-Men saga (of which he wrote the third installment, X-Men: The Last Stand), is in charge of writing this new chapter in the Star Wars saga. For now, nothing is known about this new trilogy, except that Rey is expected to appear in it. We hope that Lucasfilm doesn't make the same mistakes as with the previous trilogy...
Release: unknown.
#13 Star Wars: New Jedi Order, by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
Although the Star Wars post-logy was a box-office success, grossing over four billion dollars, it remains a real source of contention with the Star Wars fanbase. Highly criticized for its lack of risk and for numerous script decisions deemed catastrophic, it did not achieve all of its objectives. However, Lucasfilm does not intend to permanently abandon the trilogy's heroine: Rey Skywalker. Indeed, she will be the heroine of a new feature film, directed by Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will take place fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker. Accompanied by two Padawans, Rey will lay the foundations of a new Jedi Order, according to the principles set out by Luke Skywalker.
Release: Unknown.
#12 The Ninth Jedi
With the series Star Wars: Visions, launched in 2021, Lucasfilm and Disney aim to attract fans of Japanese animation. The principle is simple: entrust giants of the Japanese animation industry with original Star Wars short films. Clearly seduced by the episode The Ninth Jedi, directed by Kenji Kamiyama (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim) and animated by Productions I.G. (Kaiju no 8), Disney has ordered a sequel that will be present in season 3 scheduled for October 2025, as well as an anime The Ninth Jedi, also directed by Kenji Kamiyama and animated by the same studio.
Release: 2026.
#11 Taika Waititi's film
Very popular with the general public despite the failure of Thor: Love and Thunder, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi has been working on a Star Wars feature film for several years. Although a report informed us that the actor-director would be part of the cast of his own film, nothing is known about this new project. In any case, it still seems to be relevant, since at the last Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy informed us that Australian screenwriter Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Cruella, The Wretched) had joined the project as a co-writer. Which makes it even more intriguing!
Release: Unknown.
#10 Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld
Launched in 2022, Dave Filoni and Disney+ launched the animated series Tales of the Jedi, which recounts various landmark Jedi episodes well-known to the general public, including Count Dooku's fall to the Dark Side and Ahsoka Tano's adventures after Padmé Amidala's unfortunate death. Two years later, the series Tales of the Empire offers the same story from the Dark Side of the Force. Good news, May 4, 2025 will be the opportunity for fans to discover the third chapter: Tales of the Underworld, which will follow the characters of Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, among others. We're curious!
Release: May 4, 2025.
#9 Star Wars: Zero Company
Following the immense success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the development studio Respawn Entertainment continues its collaboration with Lucasfilm Games with a new Star Wars game announced on the sidelines of Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo and whose first trailer was released this weekend. In Star Wars: Zero Company - a turn-based tactical RPG -, the player follows the adventures of Hawks, a former Republic officer who became the leader of a group of professionals responsible for the most delicate missions, on the fringes of The Clone Wars. The game seems darker than the adventures of Cal Kestis and quite promising. It will be released in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Release: 2026.
#8 Star Wars: Starfighter, by Shawn Levy
After the triumph of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, which managed to break the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film, Shawn Levy will therefore delve into the galaxy far, far away, with the film Star Wars: Starfighter, whose title and release date were made official at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. Scheduled for release on May 26, 2027, just a few weeks after the Russo brothers' Avengers: Secret Wars - expected on May 5, 2027 -, Star Wars: Starfighter will take us five years after the events of the post-logy, confirming Lucasfilm's desire to focus on the consequences of Palpatine's fall at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. The feature film is described as a standalone film starring Ryan Gosling. While Shawn Levy has all the makings of a yes-man, we hope that by not embracing the legacy of the Skywalkers, the Jedi, and the Sith, his film will succeed in offering something new in the Star Wars galaxy. To be continued!
Release: May 26, 2027.
#7 Ahsoka (season 2)
In August 2023, Disney+ launches the series Star Wars: Ahsoka, which tells the story of Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren's search for young Ezra Bridger. While it is integrated into the Mandoverse, the series Ahsoka serves more as a sequel to the excellent animated series Star Wars Rebels. Several characters from Dave Filoni's previous series are present, including Hera Syndulla, Chopper, Huyang and Grand Admiral Thrawn. Season 2 of Ahsoka, which has been official for several months, was the focus of a panel at Star Wars Celebration, which allowed us to learn of the return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Anakin Skywalker, as well as Zeb Orrelios from the Ghost crew (who will also be present in The Mandalorian & Grogu). We also learned that Admiral Ackbar will have a face-off with Grand Admiral Thrawn. This is enough to pique our curiosity!
Release: unknown.
#6 Star Wars Jedi 3
In 2019, Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts scored a major hit with the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Audiences—who were introduced to former Padawan Cal Kestis, seeking to perfect his training at a time when the last surviving Jedi were being hunted by the Empire and its fearsome Inquisitors—were immediately taken to the game, to the point that it is often cited as one of the best games in the saga. In 2023, Star Wars Jedi: Survivoroffered a thoroughly satisfying sequel to Cal's adventure. It's now official: Star Wars Jediwill indeed be a trilogy and is likely to be released in 2027. We're waiting for more information on this subject, but Lucasfilm could well sign one of its best narrative arcs with this trilogy!
Release: unknown.
#5 The film by Dave Filoni
Often considered the most worthy heir to George Lucas, Dave Filoni is undoubtedly the most appreciated personality among Star Wars fans, to the point that he was promoted to executive artistic director at Lucasfilm. Already crowned with glory thanks to the animated series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Dave Filoni laid the foundations in 2019 with Jon Favreau for the Mandoverse, composed of the The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Mandalorian & Grogu. All of these works are building toward a common climax, a film written and directed by Dave Filoni himself, which will conclude the adventures of Din Djarin and his protégé. While the prospect of this grand climax to the Mandoverse is exciting in itself, the public's lack of interest in some of the sometimes poorly executed series (mainly The Book of Boba Fett) dampens the general enthusiasm and tarnishes the overall picture.
Release: Unknown.
#4 The James Mangold Film
A filmmaker whose talent is unanimously recognized by the press and the public, James Mangold has already collaborated with Lucasfilm by directing the disappointing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Of course, his directorial talents were never lacking, and the film's failure is more explained by its rather unexciting script. Moreover, James Mangold has the opportunity to redeem himself with a Star Wars film set 25,000 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, at the time of Dawn of the Jedi, with the aim of telling the story of the birth of the Order. For the moment without a title and without an official release date, the feature film nevertheless seems quite promising!
Release: unknown.
#3 Maul: Shadow Lord
Appearing for the first time in the film Star Wars, Episode I: ThePhantom Menace, Darth Maul is obviously one of the favorite antagonists of Star Wars fans. They will be able to rejoice since the famous Zabrak will soon be entitled to his own dedicated series, after having been a recurring character in the series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and having made an appearance in Solo: a Star Wars story. Indeed, Obi-Wan Kenobi's arch-enemy will be the protagonist of Maul: Shadow Lord, an animated series scheduled for 2026 and set a few years after The Clone Wars, with the main objective of telling the story of Maul's rise in the underworld, with the creation of a new criminal syndicate: Scarlet Dawn. In addition to marking the return of actor Sam Witwer, who had already lent his voice to the Zabrak in the two animated series mentioned above, Maul: Shadow Lord will also mark an aesthetic shift with animation closer to Spider-Verse: Across the Spider-Verse than to previous 3D animated series Star Wars, and a decidedly darker tone. Our anticipation is at its peak!
Release: sometime in 2026.
#2 The Mandalorian & Grogu, by Jon Favreau
In November 2019, Disney launched the Disney+ platform with the series The Mandalorian, the first live-action series in the Star Wars universe. Developed by director Jon Favreau and producer Dave Filoni, the series quickly rose to prominence among the best productions of the Disney era. After three seasons, Din Djarin and Grogu will make their theatrical debut. A direct follow-up to season 3 of the series, the feature film The Mandalorian & Grogu will see the iconic duo face off against a former Imperial officer played by Jonny Coyne. Also notable is the presence of Rotta, the son of Jabba the Hutt, whose presence was confirmed by the first images unveiled at Star Wars Celebration held this weekend. Finally, the great actress Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Avatar) will make her debut in the Star Wars galaxy as a New Republic pilot. Certainly, for its first Star Wars film since Star Wars, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Lucasfilm is thinking big!
Release: May 20, 2026.
#1 Andor (season 2)
Launched in August 2022, the Andor series has been wonderfully well-received by critics and fans alike, to the point of being considered the best Star Wars series. Two and a half years later, the prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will return to Disney+ on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, with a second season set to conclude the series and connect with Gareth Edwards' excellent film. Still directed by the excellent Tony Gilroy, the season will address many questions, including the encounter between Cassian Andor and the droid K-2SO. The second season of Andor will have twelve episodes, organized into four three-episode story arcs. Lucasfilm and Disney+ have decided to release the entire second season over four weeks, giving fans the opportunity to see the story arcs as three-hour movies. The first reviews of Andor season 2 are in, and it seems to be a great success for Lucasfilm; Indeed, the series is unanimously considered a masterpiece. We can't wait!
Release: April 23, 2025.
