Perplexity wants to get into Motorola and Samsung smartphones

Since 2022, Perplexity has been developing an AI assistant that combines a search engine with a conversational bot interface. The latter is based on several AI models: GPT-3.5 (OpenAI) in its free version, but it is much more powerful in its paid version with access to GPT-4, Claude 3 (Anthropic), Llama 3 (Meta), Mistral Large, and models developed internally.

Motorola is already in the loop

While the proposition is not lacking in interest, competition is fierce in the sector: Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude... Everyone can answer questions and link to sources on the internet. That's why Perplexity is relying on an original strategy to stay in the race: integrating directly into smartphones, rather than waiting for users to download the app.

Bloomberg reports that Perplexity has formed a partnership with Motorola: the AI assistant will be pre-installed on the Lenovo brand's upcoming models, including the future foldable RAZRs. The manufacturer is even planning a custom interface and a marketing campaign to promote this assistant as an alternative to Google's Gemini, which serves as the default assistant. Details will be revealed during Motorola's upcoming event, scheduled for April 24.

More importantly, Perplexity is reportedly negotiating with Samsung on a similar deal. Several options are on the table, from heavily promoting the app in the Galaxy Store to pre-installing it on the manufacturer's smartphones, to making it the default assistant. Nothing has been signed yet; discussions are reportedly at an early stage. But there is hope on the Samsung side. of the start-up: Samsung's investment fund, NEXT, invested in the company last year.
