A new scam attempt is targeting Canal+ subscribers, using fraudulent emails to steal their personal and banking data.
A well-crafted scam
Reports are multiplying concerning emails supposedly sent by Canal+. These messages, spotted by Phonandroid a few days ago, alert recipients of a payment failure and threaten to suspend their account if their banking information is not confirmed within 48 hours. To make the scam credible, the cybercriminals faithfully reproduce the Canal+ graphic charter, including legal notices and inserts on the protection of personal data… The fraud is well-crafted, everything is there. A button then redirects victims to a mirror site imitating the official customer area, where they are invited to provide their login details and bank details.
How to recognize the scam?
Several clues can help detect these phishing attempts:
- Suspicious email addresses: the sender addresses do not correspond to official Canal+ domains.
- Spelling mistakes or generic wording: fraudulent emails often contain errors or impersonal greetings.
- Unjustified urgency: the messages insist on immediate action, creating a sense of panic to push people to the error.
- Fraudulent links, which redirect to an unofficial site
Good reflexes
To avoid falling into the trap, it is necessary to adopt a few simple reflexes: never click on links contained in a suspicious email, even if it seems authentic; access the official website directly by typing the address in your browser. If in doubt, check any unusual requests with customer service, using the contact details on your invoices or the official website. It is also possible to report fraudulent emails by declaring them on internet-signalement.gouv.fr. The same procedure exists for SMS, with 33700.
If you have clicked on a fraudulent link or communicated your personal information, it is important to act quickly: contact your bank immediately to block it and monitor your transactions. Change your Canal+ password, as well as those of other accounts using the same password. Report the incident to the relevant authorities and delete the fraudulent email after reporting it.
Canal+ responds
Canal+ reacted by publishing an alert on its support site, accompanied by a capture of the fraudulent email to raise awareness among its subscribers. The company reiterates that it never requests the updating of updating banking information via email or SMS. It urges its customers to be vigilant and assures that it has reported these attempts to the competent authorities. It states: “We inform you that numerous emails and letters are currently circulating, using the Canal+ graphic charter and logo for fraudulent purposes. The authors are thus attempting to recover your confidential information, in particular your Canal+ identifiers and your bank card data. We inform you that the information relating to your contact details and your status as a subscriber Canal+ does not come from data leaks from our information systems.“
On its official website, the company reminds: “We recommend that you exercise the utmost vigilance with your personal data, including your subscriber number, which you should not provide anywhere on forums or other open discussion spaces on the Internet.“
