The release of the sequel trilogy in the 2010s turned the Star Wars universe upside down. Rey, the new heroine, was connected to Palpatine by J. J. Abrams in Episode 9, while Rian Johnson had taken a different path in the previous installment. And so curious fans wondered if Darth Sidious had sex... Quite a question, to which actor Ian McDiarmid responded to!
Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter - but how?
Many Star Wars fans were not convinced by Disney's decision to link the character of Rey to Palpatine, a script choice that poses more problems than it offers solutions. This notably implies that Darth Sidious, the terrible Sith, had carnal relations with a woman... Or not. Ian McDiarmid, who plays the Emperor, seems to have been as disoriented as the audience by this incongruous hypothesis. During an interview with our colleagues at Variety, the actor returned to the fact that the villain has descendants, and the fact that no one has discussed with him how his children were conceived!
There was never any discussion about about it. It was up to me to think about it in my head. In The Phantom Menace, there was talk of something called midichlorians, which were somehow involved in Anakin's birth. George didn't want to go too far into that. But we thought it was some kind of virgin birth, although you shouldn't say that because God knows there are all sorts of complications. Then people ask the slightly awkward question of did this evil monster ever have sex? And we don't really know the answer to that. this question either - the things in the tubes, you probably think of them, rather than the horrible vision you might have in your head of this monster having sex with anyone.
Rey's design, a mystery that even Disney can't solve
These statements by Ian McDiarmid suggest a drifting art direction at the time of The Rise of Skywalker. According to some sources, Rey was never a Palpatine, while the official discourse of the films is quite clear on the nature of the bond that unites them. Behind the scenes of the Disney trilogy, no one really knew which direction to take with the characters, and even the actors were left in the dark for part of the production. Officially, Rey is therefore Palpatine's daughter, but we do not know if, as the actor above presumes, it is more a question of a "miraculous" conception than a sexual act...
